Co-location (FAQ)

Q: What is shared colocation?
A: Shared colocation is the placing of an independent device such as a server, router, firewall or switch, on an established internet backbone, which provides a constant high-speed connection from the internet to the server. The equipment is placed inside a shared cabinet on shared internet bandwidth in a Tier 1 data center.

Q: What is the difference between dedicated server hosting and shared server colocation?
A: With server colocation, the customer owns the equipment and deploys it in one of iland's data centers where we connect to our network. Dedicated hosting is where iland provides the equipment and the customer leases it on a contractual basis.

Q: What is a "u"?
A: A "u" is a small footprint form factor for convenient deployment of computer and telecom equipment in standard data center racks. One "u" is equivalent to 1 ¾ inches (or 45 mm) in height.

Q: Can I purchase one 2u plan and colocate two 1u servers in that space?
A: No, you must purchase two 1u plans. The reason for this is that each piece of equipment uses up it's own rebootable power outlet and switch port, and is another piece of equipment that must be tracked in our inventory.

Q: What is iland's uptime guarantee?
A: 99.999% for power and connectivity.

Q: What kind of hardware can I deploy?
A: iland supports equipment that fits in standard 19 inch racks that run on AC power. It is possible to deploy standard server towers in the cabinets so long as they fit in the enclosure. Be sure to provide your sales representative with the correct dimensions of your equipment to receive an accurate quote and to ensure it meets our standards.
iland reserves the right to inspect hardware prior to deployment to ensure that it is safe to deploy. Hardware with larger dimensions and different power requirements may be deployed in dedicated cabinets or suite space.

Q: Do I need to provide rack rails for my equipment?
A: No, iland pre-configures its cabinets with rack mount shelves to manage the fluidity of a shared colocation environment.

Q: Does iland provide a keyboard, mouse and monitor for me to work on my server at the data center?
A: Yes.

Q: Do I need to provide power and network cables for my equipment?
A: No, iland already has cabinets pre-cabled for optimum cable management and cabinet cooling.

Q: Can I administer my server remotely?
A: Most modern server operating systems support remote administration, or have application software that allows remote administration to be performed. You may use any remote administration program to monitor your server(s) or other equipment co-located in our facility.

Q: Why is there a setup fee for deploying my equipment?
A: The setup fee covers up to one hour of an iland technician's assistance in ensuring that your equipment is deployed satisfactorily. This only covers placing the equipment in the cabinet and ensuring that the internet connectivity is functioning and that the rebootable power outlet is configured correctly.

Q: Do you support colocation or hosting of voice over IP (VOIP) equipment?
A: Yes.

Q: Do you allow hosting of Spam type email services?
A: No. iland Internet Solutions does not promote nor support companies who send out spam. Please do not attempt to use our service for these purposes. iland will not knowingly host any content that does not abide by the laws of the United States or other countries that iland does business in.

Q: How secure are your data centers?
A: Very secure. All data centers are equipped with multiple 24x7 video surveillance cameras, bio-metric (palm scanning) access to the facility with proximity badge through at least two doors, building-within-building data centers, and lockable cabinet access. Facilities have 24x7 security personnel on premises as well.

Q: Can I get T1's, phone lines, or other connections to my equipment?
A: Yes, this would require getting a cross connect cable (a billable item) to the provider of your choice. Please be sure to let your salesperson know about this in advance so they can quote out the correct pricing and coordinate the work.

Q: What is the speed of your internet connection?
A: Every customer receives a 100 Mbps Ethernet connection on a Cisco Switch. This means that your connection can burst up to that speed on the internet backbone. This is regardless of what bandwidth commit plan you have chosen. We can also provide a wide range of cross connects to other providers, as well as Gigabit Ethernet. The facility is carrier neutral and is connected to the backbone on minimum multiple OC48 redundant connections.

Q: What is the turn around time to get my equipment connected to your network?
A: It takes approximately two business days to schedule a deployment from the time all required paperwork is received. Shared colocation clients can then be scheduled for a deployment time, typically within one week's time (time may vary with upcoming holidays). Full cabinets take 15 business days to provision.

Q: Are your facilities carrier neutral?
